Description: A neighborhood to the West of downtown Los Angeles, Pico-Union has evolved into an almost exclusively Latino enclave. Pico-Union residents come from all parts of Mexico, Central America. Their stories speak of courage and their power of place. Part One: Profile - Luis Alfaro, a performance artist, who grew up in the neighborhood is profiled. We draw upon his piece, “Pico-Union,” recently performed at the Los Angeles Theater Center to evoke the shared experience of his large, Mexican-American family. Part Two: Photo Essay - Rosemary Kaul, a Los Angeles Times photographer, recently lived in the Pico-Union area. She has become a photo essayist for the diverse, Central American immigrant population there, and has had these photo essays featured in the Times. She talks about her work and the stories behind the photographs we see. Part Three: Readings - Local poet Sara Martinez, a community organizer in the Pico-Union area, reflects, through her poetry, upon the experiences of Central American immigrants.
